POEM

A poem by Angelina Weld Grimke

For the Candle Light

The sky was blue, so blue,
that day, And each daisy white, so white;
Oh! I knew that no more could
rains fall gray, And night again
be night.

I knew! I knew! Well, if night is night,
And the gray skies grayly cry,
I have in a book, for the candle light,
A daisy, dead and dry

SAME CITY, DIFFERENT STATE

ITHACA- Michigan, New York

MORRISTOWN- New Jersey, Tennessee

BACK IN GROOVE

I have begun reading again. I started a poem last night. Getting back into a groove. Still write down ideas for stories and poems. They don't stop coming. Now that autumn is here (my favorite season), I want to incorporate more photos in my poems.

WORDS OF WISDOM

Poetry is a beautiful way of expressing feelings - happy, sad, angry, caring. It's also a way that we share with other people, to help them with those feelings.

AMERICA'S GREAT WRITERS

America has many great writers. Some I have read; others, surprisingly, I haven't though I known about them for years. I have never read the works of Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, two icons of American literature. I enjoy reading John Steinbeck (East of Eden, The Pearl). There are three authors that are my favorites.

Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is my favorite. Noted for his poem, The Raven, Poe was a great short story writer. His famous stories are The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue. Poe is considered the father of the detective story. He wrote numerous tales of horror. Edgar Allan Poe wrote and created so much in his short and tragic life.

Herman Melville (1819-1891) of Moby Dick fame is an underrated and under appreciated author. His prose (Bartleby, Scrivener; Billy Budd) is amazing. His other works are Typee; the Confidence-Man; Benito Cereno; and The Piazza Tales. Melville also wrote poetry about the horrors of the Civil War.

Jack Kerouac is an author I came to a decade or so ago. I first became acquainted with his work when I read On The Road. I have also read Dharma Bums (my favorite), Big Sur, Desolation Alley, and Jack's Book. Kerouac also wrote poetry and haikus.

TRILOGIES? MYSTERIES?

I have written numerous short stories over the years. I am looking into creating a series of short stories with one central theme. I read Agatha Christie's mysteries years ago so that's what sparked this idea in me.

I have an ongoing project posting lighthouses on my Facebook account twice a day. Using lighthouses as a backdrop is one thought I have. Castles are even better because there's an air of mystery around them. Have to gather up all my stories and figure out how to do this.

It is a happiness to wonder, it is a happiness to dream.

DIXON PLACE

Located on the Lower East Side, Dixon Place is where the arts are created and thrive. I've visited the place a few times and like the vibes there.
