I like ambivalent characters. I have written about an actor ambivalent about fame. Shakespeare's "Hamlet" saw his old society passing and a new one coming. He was stuck in the middle. It can be mentally draining if one is stuck between this pole.
Putting folks in such a dilemma makes for them struggling to resolve something they really have no control. That is the sticking point-no control. His/her ambivalence makes for a compelling story in that they must decide which direction to go.
