Book Review

Title: As Nature Made Him
Author: John Colapinto
Publisher: Harper/Collins   New York  Copyright 2000
Rating: 8

I first heard about this book not to long after I came out as transgender. Like many books that were popular I recently started reading some of them. As Nature Made Him is about a boy would was raised as a girl and then upon discovery of ta botched circumcision as a child reverted back to being the boy he always knew he was.

Dave Reimer and his twin brother, Brian, went through a lot. Verbal and mental abuse at the hands of Dr. John Money, the person who thought that he could change David Reimer's sex. The experiment was a dismal failure. Colapinto did an excellent job of being cognizant and sensitive to David Reimer's feelings; much more so than Dr. Money who used Reimer as a guinea pig in his experiment.
John Money was a narcissistic psychopath would should have had his license to practice revoked.

I rated As Nature Made Him an eight. It was well written, without being sensationalistic. It also raised awareness of the so-called idea to 'normalize' children born with different genitalia (intersex) from their birth sex. I read the book over a decade after coming out and I'm glad that I did.
