Poetry Reading Marathon

I attended the annual New Year's Day Poetry Reading Marathon at Saint Mark's Church. It was the second year of doing so. I listened to words spoken, sung and acted. I went in the early evening tis time. There was wall to wall people. I stayed for two hours or so.

I love the many creative people that participate. No two poets are alike. There's old, young, ecletic, humorous and all things in between. Maybe someday I will participate.

Marathon Benefit Reading

The Poetry Project will host the 36th Annual Marathon Benefit Reading at St. Mark's Church in the East Village. I attended the event last year and enjoyed it. There were over a hundred poets who recited two or three poems each. It was interesting in that I rarely go out New Year's Day. Those of you in the New York City area who want to go out somewhere, check out this event. For more information go to the website www.poetryproject.com.

A new website has been added. For people living in the New York City area and Brooklyn in particular. The Book Court (www.bookcourt.org) is a pleasant place located in the Cobble Hill section. Book Court has expanded to include more genres of books and magazines. Now if they only had coffee.

A Little Bit Each Day

What I do is write a little each day. If it's ten minutes that's fine. Alittle bit is better than nothing at all. Whenever an inspiration comes to me I write it down. It can be a word, sentence, a picture or someone in the street. It doesn't matter who or where the idea comes from. It's critical that I write it down for future reference.

Always Striving

Thanksgiving was quiet for me and the family. I wrote some, mostly short stories. I went over some of my old stories and created some new ones. I always believe that no mater how well a story is written, I can write it better. I guess all writers feel that way, though I can only speak for myself.

Putting more of myself into the stories has usually been difficult. I'm afraid to show vulnerability. If stories are to be effective, the characters need to be believeable to the readers. I have been doing this of late and I feel more positive about my stories. Quite possibly I may submit a couple of articles for publication.

Reconnecting

I have revisited many places from my youth and young adulthood. A Catholic church reminds me of my religious upbringing. An avant garde neighborhood takes me back to when I hung out with many young people who wanted something different. I don't pine for days gone by but I will not forget how they shaped who I am today.

Am I a relic who is out of touch with today's world of the internet, Ipod, and digital camera? Or am I finding pleasure in the sound of solitude? There are many people who feel like I do. They want escape from all the noise and loud voices that say you must keep going. I say come away awhile and sit by the fire and warm yourself.

Reflect on times when you were carefree. Reflect on the times you wish you were young again. Believe that those times of formalism and frivolity are still within yor heart. Believe that you are still young. Believe that your life still counts for something.
